How Much Water Do You Actually Need on Wegovy?
“Eight glasses a day” has been repeated so many times it feels like medical fact. It isn’t. It’s a rough heuristic from a 1945 Food and Nutrition Board report that most people misread — the same document noted that most of that water comes from food. The actual science on hydration is more nuanced, and more useful.
Here’s how to think about your real hydration needs on Wegovy.
The starting point: weight-based calculation
The most clinically grounded baseline for fluid intake is body weight. A common formula used by registered dietitians:
Body weight in pounds ÷ 2 = daily fluid intake in ounces
At 220 lbs, that’s 110 oz. At 180 lbs, it’s 90 oz. At 150 lbs, it’s 75 oz.
This is your baseline — before adjusting for any other factors.
What changes when you’re on Wegovy
Several factors modify this baseline for GLP-1 users:
Reduced food intake = less passive hydration. On a normal diet, food contributes roughly 20% of daily fluid intake. When Wegovy reduces your appetite significantly, that contribution drops. You need to make up the difference with drinks.
Nausea-related fluid loss. Vomiting, which is more common in the first weeks at a new dose, causes acute fluid and electrolyte loss. Recovery requires more than the baseline.
Rapid weight loss. As discussed in our piece on changing hydration goals, your baseline goal should decrease as your weight drops. But during active fat loss, your kidneys are working harder to clear metabolic byproducts, which may temporarily increase needs.
Activity level. Exercise adds roughly 12–16 oz per hour of moderate activity, more in heat.
A more honest answer
For most people on Wegovy at a starting weight of 200–250 lbs:
- Sedentary, mild climate: 80–100 oz/day
- Moderate activity or warm climate: 100–120 oz/day
- Active or hot climate: 120+ oz/day
These numbers will decrease as you lose weight. An app that sets your goal at signup and never updates it will give you a goal that’s too high at month 6 — and a falsely low completion percentage that feels discouraging.
The honest caveat
Individual needs vary significantly. Kidney function, certain medications, medical conditions, and other factors can all shift these numbers. Consult your prescribing physician if you have concerns about dehydration or overhydration.
